I sometimes muse on the array of expert opinion that has and is still being ignored on the Brexit question. Let’s have a look at them.
We know that 90% of economists including those at The Treasury and the IMF thought Brexit was a bad idea. Most of the economic thinks tanks were advocating remain.
Virtually every world leader except Trump and Putin thought Brexit was a bad idea and said so openly.
We live in a representative democracy and 75% of MPs were remainers. In the Lords it is closer to 85%. Parliament is thus predominantly in favour of staying in the EU.
An unnamed cabinet minister said this week he has yet to meet a senior civil servant who voted to leave or who thinks Brexit is a good idea.
Most of Industry in the form of the CBI and the EEF are opposed to leaving the EU.
The financial sector is worried about losing passporting rights into the EU and is against Brexit.
The Japanese, who employ 140,000 people directly with many more in the supply chains cautioned against Brexit.
The whole question of Brexit is immensely complex, so much so that after three months the brightest minds in government cannot even say what it is we WANT never mind what we are likely to get. It would be astonishing to me if Brexit turned out successfully and would destroy any faith one might have in experts.
However, those who are most enthusiastic about leaving the EU ignore all of this and accept the decision of the British people, 99.9% of whom do not even begin to understand what they have asked the government to do. This is called democracy.
