Sean O'Grady, a journalist on the Indendent, has written (HERE) what I think must rank as the silliest column written so far about Brexit. Mr O'Grady at least concedes that Brexit has damaged the UK economy but says he was still right to vote leave. Fair enough.
But then he goes on to suggest we now have the chance to build a "globally competitive economy" and thinks we can't do this inside the EU because it drives up our costs. This doesn't even begin to explain how Germany has done this consistently since 1951 inside and outside the EU. In fact his argument is plain nonsense.
His plan for post Brexit UK is this:
- Borrow more money and spend it on infrastructure including Heathrow expansion
- Make economic deals including offering some South Asian countries like Singapore, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand our nuclear "umbrella".
- Reduce worker's rights to bring down the unit cost of labour
- Increase immigration
- Experiment with low taxes and light regulation
- Offer unilateral free trade in designated sectors
Most of this could be done inside the EU and the rest would turn us into a low wage sweatshop economy. Note the comments are universally hostile and rightly so.
